The International Conference on Computing and Missions (ICCM) is an annual get-together of dedicated people who have a common interest and involvement in computers and missions. We gather for a unique experience of spiritual fellowship, information-sharing and vision renewal. ICCM provides a forum for missions-related people to meet personally and to share ideas, information and expertise in order to perform their jobs more effectively.
ICCM is an event, not an organization.
ICCM '96 and the Information Specialist Consultation(ISC) will be hosted by Abilene Christian University in Abilene, Texas. The $195 registration fee for ICCM '96 includes registration, room and board. ICCM '96 Starts with a Texas BBQ at 6:30pm Friday, June 7 and ends with lunch on Tuesday, June 11.
The $45 fee for the Information Specialist Consultation includes registration, room and board. The Information Specialist Consultation starts with supper on Thursday, June 6 and ends with the Texas BBQ supper on Friday, June 7.
Conferees will lodge one to a bedroom in the two and four bedroom University Park Apartments. Each apartment has one bathroom. It is a short walk across the parking lot from University Park to the College of Biblical and Family Studies (CBFS) building where all ICCM sessions will be held. Meals will be in the World Famous Bean (cafeteria) in the ACU Campus Center next to the CBFS building.
An
Information Specialist Consultation (ISC) will be held for
missions information specialists, librarians and researchers in
Abilene, Texas, on June 6-7 as a pre-conference to the
International Conference on Computing and Missions (ICCM). The
two major ISC discussion topics will be:
To become better acquainted with those having an interest in the development of GMIN, please complete the ISC Survey and return it to: fweimer@david.wheaton.edu Also you may want to read about the ISC discussion topics in more detail.
Following on the ICCM '96 theme of "Building Bridges of Collaboration," the emphasis of ISC will be on developing a "cooperative movement that recognizes each organization as distinct and having its own mandate, but which calls upon all to 'practice the Body of Christ' by working together for the cause of Christ."

Abilene Texas is 180 miles West of the Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) airport. Most airlines that fly into DFW can connect to Abilene Municipal Airport via American Eagle, and American Southeast Airlines(ASA). There will be free shuttle service for the ten minute drive between Abilene Municipal Airport and University Park Apartments. The shuttle will run regularly Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Tuesday of the conference. Look for a person wearing an ICCM nametag. The shuttle van will have an ICCM sign on the dashboard. We'll be happy to give you a free ride to/from the airport at other times upon your request during the conference.
By car ACU is near Interstate 20 on Texas Highway 351. You'll be able to see the bell tower and rotunda of the Bible building from Interstate 20. Travel on Interstate 20 to the Northeast corner of Abilene and take the Texas 351 exit. Go West (toward town) about a quarter mile and turn south (left) onto Judge Ely Blvd. Take the first right (west) into University Park Apartments.
The ICCM '96 registration desk will be in the University Apartments main office.
If you can't come - we have four projects to encourage remote participation in ICCM '96!
Since ICCM is a conference "By missions, For missions" we do not plan to charge for the ICCM96 mailing list, the CU-SeeMe experiment or the IRC services at this time. We will let you know if we incur any expenses that will demand remote participants help pay.
The first project is theICCM '96 CU-SeeMe experiment. This is an experiment to see how well live point-to-multi-point videoconferencing via the internet using CU-SeeMe works. Go to our ICCM '96 CU-SeeMe experiment home page to find more information.
The second is our Scribe project headed by Roger Taylor of Operation Mobilization in the U.K. office. The idea of this project is to report on each ICCM '96 session and post the reports on the ICCM96@xc.org mailing list conference and on a web site. Remote participants can subscribe to ICCM96@xc.org in order to receive the reports via E-Mail. Remote participants will also be able to send the team questions and comments to be presented during the ICCM '96 sessions. If you or someone you know want to be a remote participant and receive the reports via E-Mail, please send a message to hub@XC.Org. In the text of the message put:
Subscribe ICCM96
To follow the conference on the World Wide Web, all you need to do is to browse this site (http://www.xc.org/iccm). The reports of the sessions, along with presenters' materials and photos taken during the sessions will be added as they happen. The Program Outline will become the table of contents and jumping off point for the conference pages.
The third project is to provide live interactive sessions using the Internet Relay Chat (IRC) protocol. Bob Whirl, with Source of Light Ministries in Madison, Georgia USA, is heading the ICCM '96 IRC team.
Our fourth project is that we will audiotape and videotape each session. The audiotapes will be $4 each plus shipping. The videotapes will be $10 each plus shipping. We will come up with a package price if you buy a complete set. The program will be eight main sessions and four break out sessions for a total of 16 sessions.

ICCM '96 attendees will have access to the College of Business Administration (COBA) computer lab during ICCM '96. The lab has forty Macintosh computers (powerPC 6100's) and twenty 486DX, Windows 3.1 machines. All the machines have sound and CD-ROM drives. They are all on ethernet via thinnet (bnc) cabling. The lab network is directly connected to the Internet via the campus T1 line. Each machine has its own IP address.
All the machines have network software like Netscape and Telnet as well as bunches of other stuff like Authorware, SPSS, Microsoft Office and various Web Authoring stuff available (some local, some networked.) You may bring your own software - but there will only be a few machines available for you to load it on.
We plan on having five Windows machines we can modify - we may want to load Win95 on a couple. The other 15 Windows machines need to stay as originally configured.
The forty Macintosh machines have a program that erases any changes you make to the hard drive when the machine is turned off. So bring floppies to store anything you want to save on the Macs.
We will set up an FTP site wherein we can store ICCM '96 files people want to share. We will make this site available to remote participants during and after the conference.
There will be addresses and limited deskspace available for those who want to bring their own machines - Please be responsible for bringing your own thinnet ethernet adapter appropriate for your machine.
We plan on having the lab open:
6 | Thursday | noon to midnight |
7 | Friday | 8am to midnight |
8 | Saturday | 7am to midnight |
9 | Sunday | 1pm to midnight |
10 | Monday | 7am to midnight |
11 | Tuesday | 7am to 1pm |
The walk from University Apartments to the entrance of COBA is about the same as Bergwell to Nassbaum at Taylor University. We just want ya'll to get your exercise!
Please let Tom Dolan know if you have any special needs concerning the computer lab. The COBA people have been very helpful and will be willing to work at accommodating requests.
There are two online mailing lists associated with ICCM, ICCM@xc.org and ICCM96@xc.org. Both lists are hosted by MAFxc
The purpose of ICCM@xc.org is to notify missions computer people of the yearly conference agenda and to allow attendees to maintain contact with each other. If you would like to subscribe to ICCM@xc.org, please send a message to hub@XC.Org. In the text of the message put:
Subscribe ICCM
The machine will automatically subscribe you and send you a subscription confirmation message, which will also tell you how to unsubscribe.
The purpose of ICCM96@xc.org is to disseminate reports and presenter materials of ICCM '96 presentations. A scribe team will report on each ICCM '96 sessions. These reports and other electronic materials will be sent to subscribers of ICCM96@xc.org. If you would like to subscribe to ICCM96@xc.org, please send a message to hub@XC.Org. We are planning on having a bicycle trek on Sunday afternoon during ICCM '96. However there is no one in Abilene who rents bicycles! We will restrict the group to the first ten people. We will borrow enough mountain and touring bikes for the group. Some of these loaners will be REAL bicycles - Cannondale, Raleigh, and one Toureasy recumbent (set up for someone with a 32" inseam) - others will be in the Wal-Mart variety.
So - if you want to go on Bike Trek '96 you need to make your reservations with me via E-Mail now. The first ten will get to go:
We have in mind an 18 mile (or longer if there is a demand) trek to the big town of Potosi (Poe-toe-see) and back. It's a gradual 300 ft. climb all the way to Potosi, downhill and with the wind all the way back. It's flat out here - so no chance to climb any mountains or big hills. There will be a sag wagon following for those who may break down - either physically or mechanically. Most of the roads have a wide shoulder separated from the main highway by a painted line. Most of the tour will be through rural ranching country.
Remember it will probably be hotter here in Texas than it has been in Upland Indiana the past couple of years. However the humidity will probably be low, down near 20 per cent. The sag wagon will carry liquid refreshment.
Bob Marcho, Recruiting Director for the CBFS, is our local bicycle guru - please contact him if you require more technical information about the route: Marcho@Bible.acu.edu. By-the-way, Bob is one of those people who rides in luxury on a recumbent bike! He's a preacher also - now you know to take whatever he says with a grain of salt! :-)
